Ikwezi Mining denies causing damage in Dannhauser drilling dispute
Ikwezi Mining refutes blasting allegations after residents report home damage near core drilling site in Dannhauser.
Ikwezi Mining has firmly denied allegations that its core drilling operations in Dannhauser caused structural damage to nearby homes.
Responding to claims that blasting led to cracked walls and other damage, the mining company described the accusations as “factually incorrect, technically unfounded, and damaging”.
“Current activities involve core drilling—not blasting—which is a surface-level, non-intrusive geological process,” said a spokesperson. “It does not create vibrations strong enough to damage property. Claims to the contrary are misleading and lack technical merit.”
The disputed drilling is taking place on land within Ikwezi’s existing mining rights area, which was approved in 2012 following public consultations that began in 2010. The company stated that both verbal and written notice were provided to the landowner, Ms Bongiwe Mavimbela, before the start of drilling.
“We received written acknowledgement and provided contact details for follow-ups. Unfortunately, the complainant took the matter to the media without attempting direct engagement,” said the spokesperson.
Ikwezi also raised concerns about alleged intimidation of staff and contractors, including threats and an incident in which drilling machinery was set alight. These incidents are currently under investigation by law enforcement, and private security has been deployed to ensure worker safety.
“All operations are conducted within legal parameters and overseen by the Department of Mineral & Petroleum Resources (DMPR), including regular environmental audits and risk assessments,” the company confirmed. The current mining right remains valid until 2042 and covers multiple properties in the region.
In response to questions over community consultation, Ikwezi emphasised its ongoing efforts. “Our process has been inclusive since 2010. We continue to engage through monthly forums and quarterly updates.”
Ikwezi appealed for calm and constructive dialogue. “We encourage residents to make use of established engagement platforms. Misinformation only increases tension and delays progress. We remain committed to responsible operations and development in Dannhauser.”
