Police arrest five and seize drugs in Sibongile, Dundee, crackdown
Police swoop on Sibongile and arrest five suspects as drugs worth thousands are seized during a coordinated operation.
A coordinated multi-disciplinary police operation in Sibongile resulted in the arrest of five suspects and the seizure of a large quantity of drugs under the Dundee policing precinct.
The operation was conducted late last week by Umzinyathi District Crime Intelligence, Newcastle Public Order Policing, Glencoe K9 Unit and district visible policing members. Five locations linked to suspected drug dealing were targeted.
Police confiscated 806 mandrax tablets, 348 heroin capsules and 24 small packets of crystal meth during the operation.
SAPS spokesperson, Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana, said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime in the district.
“Members acted on information about drug-dealing activities and successfully arrested five suspects aged between 22 and 38. All illegal substances recovered will be used as evidence in court,” Nkwanyana said.
The suspects have since appeared in the Dundee Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of drugs. Investigations are continuing to establish whether they are linked to wider drug distribution networks operating in Umzinyathi.
District Commissioner, Major General Francis Slambert, commended the officers involved and said similar operations would continue.
“The SAPS remains committed to dismantling drug networks and restoring safety in our communities,” Nkwanyana added.
