Former Dundee High pupils reunite after more than 50 years

Former Dundee High classmates return to town and celebrate lifelong friendships during memorable reunion weekend

Former Dundee High School pupils from the classes of 1975 and 1976 reunited over the weekend of April 17 to 19, marking more than five decades since matriculating.

For many, it was their first visit back to Dundee in over 50 years, while others have remained in the town throughout that time.

Memories shared during special reunion weekend

Festivities included a school visit and three functions hosted at the farm of Toger and Cornia Haupt, overlooking the surrounding mountains.

The Friday evening gathering was filled with excitement, laughter and reminiscing. The venue was decorated with lights, flowers and school colours, while guests received commemorative DHS golf shirts and name tags.

Classmates travelled from across South Africa and overseas, although some were unable to attend due to international travel disruptions.

On Saturday morning, the group visited Dundee High School, where they were welcomed by the school choir singing the school anthem in English and Afrikaans. The visit brought back fond memories, especially of former music teacher Dolly Osborn.

Attendees praised the school’s modern facilities and acknowledged the efforts of staff and the School Governing Body in preserving the institution’s 142-year legacy.

The celebrations continued with a gala evening, where music from their school years saw many return to the dance floor as stories and memories were shared.

Special guests included former rugby coach Braam Cronjé, while tribute was also paid to former teachers, including the late June Adendorff.

The reunion concluded on Sunday with a final gathering at the farm, where a minute’s silence was observed for 28 classmates who have passed away.

Organisers described the weekend as a meaningful celebration of friendship, shared history and lasting connections, with hopes of another reunion in five years.
