MK protest shuts municipal offices in Dundee

MK Party members locked Dundee municipal offices during a protest over illegal trading and undocumented foreigners.

Dundee municipal staff have been left standing outside in the cold this morning after chains and locks were placed on the main entrance to the municipal offices.

A police officer later cut the chain and lock off to allow entry.

SAPS officers were monitoring the situation as members of the MK Party gathered outside the building.

MK calls for action on illegal trading

MK Party spokesperson Sandile Khayendi said protesters want Endumeni Mayor Mcebo Mkhize to lead a march aimed at removing foreign-owned businesses operating illegally in the town.

“We held a similar march two months ago where a petition was handed over to the mayor, but nothing has happened since then,” Khayendi said.

He said the party wants all street trading abolished in an effort to clean up the town and make it more attractive to investors.

“We want all undocumented foreigners to leave. We do not want foreigners trading on pavements while also operating shops in the central business district,” he said.

Khayendi also questioned how some traders are able to afford rental costs in the central business district and called on SAPS to investigate possible illegal activities.

At the time of publication, no councillor or senior municipal official had arrived at the scene.
