Residents concerned about drug dealing in Alexandra Street
People are pleading with the police to 'clean up' the streets
Residents who live in the vicinity of Alexandra Street have raised concerns about alleged drug dealing taking place in the street and the taxi rank.
They say what makes them worry is that, since this is where many schoolchildren wait for their transport, they are worried that youngsters could be ‘dragged into’ or introduced to drugs.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous in fear for her life because she said the dealers are very dangerous, said, ”We plead with the municipality and taxi association to make plans for schoolchildren and maybe find another safe place where they can wait for their taxis, because here they are in danger. We also noticed that the pavement is dug up and due to that, the road is undriveable. We also plead with Estcourt police to assist because there is no way that they don’t know about what is happening in this area.”

On Thursday (February 22), SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan reported that the police had arrested one person for dealing in drugs after being apprehended in a taxi.
”A 25-year-old suspect has made an appearance in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court. He faces a charge of being in possession of dependence-producing substances. On Tuesday afternoon, officers from the Estcourt Highway Patrol were conducting patrols in the Estcourt taxi rank area when they came across a man carrying a small bag. When they stopped the vehicle, the man ran off. He was chased and apprehended by the officers. On searching him, they found 128 capsules suspected to be heroin and 120 pieces of rock cocaine. The suspect was immediately arrested,” said Khan.
