Violent altercations with tragic consequences seem to be on the rise in the Vryheid area, with seven people killed in various incidents recently.
Two men and a woman were killed on Wednesday last week in the Mvunyane area, Pongola. According to police, three men and a woman were allegedly having a little get-together when an argument broke out between the men. One of them went and got a firearm from his home, and opened fire on the other two. Two men died at the scene, while the woman was injured and later died in hospital. Police are investigating the case.
A man was killed in the Nhlazatshe area on Friday evening in another shooting. The killer allegedly entered the victim’s home and fired multiple shots. The man died at the scene.
A stabbing on Saturday saw a man losing his life on a bus en-route to Mondlo. It is alleged that two men were fighting in the bus and one of them pulled out a knife, stabbing the other. The victim died at the scene.
In a case of alleged vigilante justice, a 40-year-old man was killed in Emadoshini, Bhekuzulu, on Sunday. Melusi Zulu’s body was found in the road. It is alleged that Zulu and his cousin were drinking at their home when they started arguing. Zulu allegedly hit the cousin on the head with a hammer. A family member was contacted about the fighting and took his injured cousin to hospital. Zulu had left the scene by that time. When he later returned to his house, it is alleged that angry community members spotted him and he was assaulted. Zulu died in the street outside his house. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation continues.
In another tragic incident on Sunday morning in Mondlo, a 72-year-old woman was killed allegedly by her grandson. According to information currently at hand, Elizabeth Mosia’s grandson demanded cash and car keys from her. The grandson allegedly stabbed her when she didn’t comply. Mosia died at a clinic. The grandson has been arrested and police are investigating.
