Marching to protest against increase in illegal immigrants
The marchers pleaded with government, police and the municipality to work together to address this issue.
Estcourt residents took to the streets for a peaceful protest called ‘March and March’ to express their concern and unhappiness regarding undocumented foreigners in town. The march was also joined by Inkosi Langalibalele Mayor Mduduzi Myeza and his deputy, Sithabiso Dladla.
The marchers demonstrated their dissatisfaction with the increasing number of illegal immigrants in town, accusing them of ‘taking over’ with their spaza shops. The marchers said they are tired of seeing this happening, while the government does nothing about it. They are asking government to control the situation.
The march started at the Town Hall, passed the police station and ended at Home Affairs.

It was said in a memorandum that was read to the Department of Home Affairs: “We are here to express deep concerns and dismay occasioned by the high volume of illegal immigrants in South Africa and the significant negative impact it has on the skyrocketing level of unemployment, safety, security and social economic well-being of our community.”
Home Affairs acknowledged the memorandum and promised to respond within seven days.
