Lions call on the community to help rebuild SPCA kennels
The Newcastle Lions Club calls on residents and businesses to help revamp the kennels.
The Newcastle Lions Club is on a mission to make a meaningful difference this year and is calling on the community to help make it happen.
The club has placed its focus on assisting the Newcastle SPCA, which suffered extensive damages during last year’s floods. The flooding left large parts of the facility in poor condition, creating an urgent need for repairs and upgrades.
The Lions are appealing to community members and local businesses who are passionate about animal welfare and community service to help give the SPCA a much-needed facelift.
According to Lions Club member Lizette van der Berg, the SPCA plays a critical role in protecting; caring for; and rehabilitating abandoned, abused and vulnerable animals. She explained that the facility is in dire need of attention, particularly the kennels that house dogs waiting to be adopted into their ‘forever homes’.
“As Lions, we are committed to supporting this essential service, but we cannot do it without the backing of our community,” said van der Berg.
How does it work?
Option 1: Sponsor a kennel
Each kennel sponsorship costs R2 000. Funds raised will be used to repair, repaint and upgrade the sponsored kennel. In recognition of each contribution, the Newcastle Lions Club will install a personalised plaque displaying the sponsor’s business name on the kennel.
There are currently 86 kennels at the SPCA, including both adoption and boarding kennels.
Option 2: Donate building materials
Those unable to contribute financially can assist by donating building materials.
Items required include:
- Exterior and interior paint
- Cement mix
- Wire mesh or fencing materials
- Roofing sheets
- Waterproofing products
- Any other relevant building supplies
“Every contribution, big or small, helps us improve the living conditions of animals in the SPCA’s care,” said van der Berg.
Why get involved?
Van der Berg said community support directly improves the safety, comfort and dignity of animals that depend on the SPCA daily. “A stronger SPCA means a stronger, kinder community and your business should be part of that,” she added.
