Dundee Round Table hears call to value human touch over Artificial Intelligence

Guest speaker urges Round Table members to uphold human connection in an age shaped by Artificial Intelligence.

While Artificial Intelligence may have made life easier in many ways, it can never replace the passion and kindness shown by one person to another.

That was the message from guest speaker and veteran Round Tabler Charles Wade at the Dundee Round Table induction dinner on Saturday evening.

“You can have Artificial Intelligence write you a song, a poem or a book within minutes simply by typing in what you require,” said Wade.

“But only a human can reach out to another person. Artificial Intelligence cannot do that. In these times, Table requires people willing to use their hands to ensure that our motto – Adopt, Adapt and Improve – is met.”

Celebrating a year of achievement

Outgoing chairman Bjorn Talanda reflected on the club’s activities over the past year. A highlight was the world visit in May, when 48 Tablers from eight countries travelled to Dundee.

Other successful initiatives included a blood drive and the popular ‘knipmes’ braai.

Stuart Cumming, a former Dundee Tabler now living in Australia, attended the function and inducted Henning Liebenberg as the new chairman. Cumming is now a member of the 41 Club, which former Tablers join after reaching the age of 40.

Liebenberg said he was optimistic about the year ahead as Dundee Round Table continues to promote fellowship, encourage responsible citizenship and improve local society through practical action.

The evening concluded with the traditional axing ceremony for Talanda, who has now also joined the 41 Club. He succeeds Chris Purcell as chairman of that organisation.
