SAPS probe alleged assault at Volksrust police station
Police are investigating a video showing an alleged assault by a constable at Volksrust police station earlier this month.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation after a video circulating on social media allegedly shows a Volksrust police constable assaulting a member of the public.
According to a statement posted on Facebook, the SAPS has confirmed that an investigation is underway following the circulation of the video across various platforms.
Incident under scrutiny
The incident reportedly took place on April 2 at Volksrust police station.
The SAPS said it has initiated an internal investigation to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
“It is worth noting that, in light of the serious allegation, the SAPS has instituted an internal investigation to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement read.
Parallel investigations launched
In addition to the internal process, a criminal investigation has also been opened to ensure that the matter is addressed transparently.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified and is expected to conduct a parallel investigation.
The SAPS said IPID’s involvement aligns with its commitment to accountability and transparency within the policing profession.
The SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, said the organisation remains committed to upholding professional standards.
“The professional conduct of our members is of utmost importance and we are committed to maintaining public trust. We are determined to act swiftly and decisively against any wrongdoing,” he said.
The SAPS added that it remains steadfast in promoting professionalism and upholding its Code of Conduct, which governs the behaviour of all members.
