Vryheid maidens honoured for commitment to purity

Vryheid ceremony honoured young maidens for purity, education and commitment to traditional values.

The fourth annual ceremony honouring young maidens who have chosen to stay virgins was held at Lakeside Hall on Saturday.

The event brought together community members, parents and young women aged 18 and older to celebrate their commitment to purity.

Dressed in traditional maiden attire and graduation regalia, the young women proudly received certificates in recognition of their personal journeys.

Founder and leader of Isibani seLakeside in Ward 22, Makhosi Phenyane, said the ceremony was held to celebrate young women who have remained pure while pursuing their education and preparing for marriage.

“We recently celebrated all those young women who have kept themselves pure. We honoured maidens who have completed their tertiary education, as well as those preparing for marriage while still virgins. Some are already married, while others are traditionally engaged.”

Inspiring the next generation

As one of the main organisers of the event, Phenyane said several respected guests were invited to inspire and encourage the maidens.

These included Dr Khabo Nene Mdlalose, Inkosi Buthelezi and Sifiso Nkosi (Umama Wenqothovu), who shared words of motivation and encouragement with the maidens and those who attended.

“It is important to guide and support the girl child. They need attention, care and love, and this ceremony is one of the ways we show them that they are valued. We also want younger girls to know that it is possible to remain pure throughout tertiary education or until marriage.”

Community support recognised

Phenyane expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the event. She thanked Dr Khabo Nene Mdlalose, Inkosi Buthelezi, Omama Benqothovu, Buhle from Filidi Secondary School, Ward 22 Councillor Lambiso, local entertainers and the parents who continue to support the initiative.

She also acknowledged her organising team and members of Isibani seLakeside for their dedication and commitment to making the annual ceremony a success.
