Motorists brace for possible December fuel price increase

Motorists will possibly face higher fuel costs this week as petrol, diesel and paraffin prices increase across South Africa. Read more here:

Motorists are being urged to prepare for a slight dent in their wallets ahead of the holiday season with the price of petrol and diesel set to rise this month.

The latest fuel increases comes amidst higher international product prices, while a slightly stronger rand has helped soften the blow, reducing the potential increase by at least three cents.

The predicted hikes are as follows:

  • Petrol 93: to increase between 19c to 20c per litre
  • Petrol 95: to increase between 24c to 26c per litre
  • Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): to increase between 60c to 72c per litre
  • Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): to increase between 77c to 89c per litre
  • Illuminating paraffin: to increase by 68c per litre

What you might pay from Wednesday:

Motorists can expect to pay around R20.54 for a litre of 95 Unleaded petrol at the coast and R21.37 inland, where 93 Unleaded will cost roughly R21.17.

The wholesale price of 50ppm diesel is set to rise to around R19.23 at the coast and R19.99 inland.

Brent Crude oil prices remained relatively stable throughout November, reaching a high of $65 per barrel on November 11 before easing into the $62–$63 range later in the month.

Despite the latest increase, December’s inland price for 95 Unleaded (R20.54) is still about 26c lower than it was in January 2025.

Diesel, however, continues its upward trend, with 50ppm set to be about 55c more expensive than at the start of the year.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources is expected to confirm the final fuel adjustments before Wednesday.
