Throwback Thursday: The VCR

Do you remember when the video cassette recorder (VCR) was the centre of home entertainment for the family?

Before streaming, instant downloads and on-demand re-runs, entertainment came in the form of a black, rectangular tape you could play on a Video Cassette Recorder (VCR).

There was something special about the grainy picture, occasional static and familiar whirring sound of the tape spinning. Families gathered around the television set (not flat screen), watching movies hired from the video store or TV shows recorded the previous day.

In today’s modern world, we have endless streaming platforms to choose from, not to mention downloading content as well. But the nostalgia of a limited selection of movies mattered just as much back in the day. As the label on the video cassette often said: “Be kind, rewind”.

Q&A: What was the first movie you ever watched on a VCR?
