How to deal with in-law criticism

Most of us take these criticisms with a smile (and then curse behind bedroom doors).

One of the most frequent complaints about parents-in-law is their constant criticism of the way that we do things.

The list is endless: from the way that we start a fire to the way that we raise our children and choose to spend our money. There is only so much grinning one can bear, right?

If we want this to change, we should start by looking at our own behaviour. Most of us take these criticisms with a smile (and then curse behind bedroom doors).

This can lead to a lot of tension between partners, and cause growing tension in our relationship with our in-laws. Something to try: let your in-laws know that although you value their wisdom and input, you feel frustrated when they put you and your decisions down.

Follow this up with a suggestion of how you would prefer them to approach difficult situations in the future.

Explain to them that this is not a cause for on-going conflict, but a means to building a relationship that you value.
