Top tips from the experts on fighting and living with diabetes.
1. Always eat three meals a day.
2. Eat high fibre carbohydrates such as oats, all-bran, grainy breads, rye bread as well as cooked starches.
3. Cut down on fats, particularly saturated fats (animal) such as creamy sauces and dressings, animal fats, processed meats and deep fried foods.
Rather opt for lean meat and fish as low fat alternatives to fatty meats.
A healthier option is to grill, steam or oven-bake food, instead of cooking or frying with oil and other fats.
4. Up your daily intake of fruit and vegetables.
5. Include more beans and lentils – try adding them to stews, casseroles, soups, or to a salad.
6. Aim for at least two portions of oily fish a day.
Examples include sardines, salmon, tuna and pilchards.
7. Limit sugar and sugary foods in your diet.
8. Reduce salt in your diet, such as that found in canned foods, pickles, bacon and other processed meats.
9. Drink alcohol in moderation; the maximum for women is two units, while men may have three at most.
Never drink on an empty stomach.
10. Avoid diabetic foods or drinks: they can still affect your blood glucose levels and are expensive.
