Headaches
Headaches can be caused by a variety of factors, including tension and stress.
They can also be caused by changes in sleeping patterns, poor eating patterns and certain foods, dehydration and exposure to bright lights or sounds (including excessive TV or computer usage).
Although over-the-counter pain killers are effective in treating headaches, research suggests that pain killers should be limited. When a headache starts, it can be useful to apply ice, or drink room temperature water (cold water and caffeine can make a headache worse).
Yoga, acupuncture and massage (head, neck and ear lobes), regular sleep and aerobic exercise have also proved very effective in controlling and limiting tension and migraine headaches. However, limiting stress and tension is also important.
This can be done by seeking professional support for stress and tension, which can include learning relaxation techniques.
However, if a headache lasts longer than 72 hours or is accompanied by confusion, visual disturbances, weakness, numbness, vomiting, diarrhoea or changes in speech, it is useful to consult a medical practitioner for further assessment.
