Golfers enjoy softer conditions after welcome rains

This Saturday’s golf competition is the March Monthly Mug, sponsored by Springbok Lodge

Saturday’s golf competition was a club-sponsored Four-Ball Better-Ball Stableford event and all enjoyed the softer conditions after the very welcome rains. Winners, on a count-out with 45 points, were Jan Pretorius and Leon Steenkamp from Gerhard van der Westhuizen and Carla Craffert. Riaan du Plessis, Murray Hume, Jan Pretorius, Patrick Pieterse, Dries Slabbert and Noel Hoffman carded twos.

Wednesday afternoon’s ‘Skaapdag’ competition, sponsored by FNB Insurance Brokers, saw a good field competing in fine weather. The winner was Willie Erasmus with an excellent 42 points, with Chris Nel in second place on 39 points and the only two-club.

Thursday afternoon’s second round of the Ferobrake Business League was completed without too many wet golfers returning to the clubhouse. At this stage, the leaders are the Mulligans with 96 points, followed by Paragon with 94, Ferobrake with 91 and Boardmans with 90. There are still a few rounds to go to decide the overall winners of this very popular nine-hole Alliance league event.

The bowls ‘tabs-in’ competition on Saturday afternoon was sponsored by Kurt Swoboda and we enjoyed a good turnout. Thankfully, the threatening thunderstorm held off until we had all finished our third game and could head off to the clubhouse for some welcome refreshments. Winners with a score of six points +16 were Barbara Elworthy and Desairee Maartens. Gavin Livingston and Kurt Swoboda were runners-up with three points +10, with Cheryl Mostert and Jane Duncan in third spot with a score of three points +1. The ‘spider’ was won by Jane, whose bowls surprisingly drew the jack without a single bump from the other bowls.

The Club Bowls Championships got underway on Friday afternoon with a Ladies’ Pairs match that saw Cheryl Mostert and Veronika Schuler taking on Glynnis Turconi and Jane Duncan. Glynnis and Jane played some great bowls to get off to a great start and build a good lead of 12-1 after six ends. The challenge had to come from Veronika and Cheryl, who reeled in their opponents to see the score close to 16-13 in favour of Glynnis and Jane after 16 ends. However, the front-runners pulled out all the stops in the final two ends to emerge as the eventual winners with the score at 19-13. An excellent game of bowls and a fitting start to this year’s championships. The draw for all the championship events is on the notice board and bowlers are urged to complete their matches as soon as possible.

The feathers are sure to fly on Monday, April 27 (Freedom Day), when the cocks, hens, chicks and scratchers get together (for no foul reason whatsoever) to take to the bowling run and contest the ‘Fowl Bowls Day’. This is sure to be a truly fun event, so keep an eye on the weekly reports in the Gazette for the build-up to this not-to-be-missed bowls competition.
