There’s no place like South Africa

Are you proud to be South African?

It’s official, South Africa is the third most beautiful country in the world.
In a recent survey, travellers and backpackers agreed that South Africa was a beautiful country to visit, with its wild animals and picturesque landscapes.
The rainbow nation was only beaten by Italy, second, and Scotland in first.
Looking at South Africa, it’s hard not to agree with the survey. From our beautiful beaches to our majestic mountains and our fantastic Big Five, who wouldn’t want to visit South Africa.
But while tourists love the country, they only stay long enough to see the beauty and wonder we have to offer. They don’t see the strikes over service delivery or the fights in Parliament.
They don’t see the poor suffer while councillors drive by in luxury vehicles. They very seldom see our other big five: rape, robbery, murder, fraud and corruption.
And they obviously haven’t seen Dundee Taxi Rank. All criticism aside though, South Africa is majestic. Just look at the Nkandla Compound, a masterpiece to rival any palace in the world. None of them has a fire pool.
It makes you wonder though.
Did Zuma use tax payers money to upgrade Nkandla in the hopes of beautifying the area to win more tourism awards? Aaah, it all makes sense now.
The president was only doing his bit to market the country as a tourist destination. The tourism brochures would read: Come to South Africa, we have fire pools.
Or something like, South Africa: The land of wealth (if you have a friend or family member in government who gets you a tender). Where else in the world can you commit a crime, get sentenced for it, serve a few months in jail and then get released on medical parole. Just ask Schabir about that one.
Where else can you cross the border (no papers required), open a shop in a community, help the community, then get assaulted or killed by the community because you’re not one of them?
Sorry, your colour isn’t part of the rainbow, so you don’t belong here. But according to JZ it isn’t xenophobia, it’s merely criminals being opportunistic. Nice one Bra Jacob.
Despite the gaping problems that are evident on a day-to-day basis, it is truly a wonderful country to live in. So admire the beauty, soak up the surroundings and be proud to be South African.
