Looking back on your mistakes with regret stops you from moving forward. We often assume others will think constantly about this mistake we’ve made. But is it really as bad as you think or are you blowing it out of proportion?
None of us want to make mistakes and slip up, I feel it’s only part of human nature. Many of us are actually terrified of making mistakes. And for me that’s a huge mistake in itself.
Often, this fear prevents us from taking the risk that could ultimately lead to an amazing achievement or experience. What if it doesn’t work?
What if I say something silly? What will people think? What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?
And what’s the cost of not taking that risk – not trying?
What opportunity are you giving up? I believe we all know that we can learn from mistakes, that failures or set backs are stepping stones to success, but that still doesn’t make us and accept them.
Instead we cover them up or avoid them. If there’s something you want to do to make things right, do it. Then you’ll know you’ve done all you can, and you can let yourself off the hook.
If you’ve done what you can to fix things and you are still worrying, then the only person suffering is you. Remember you can control your thoughts.
You can choose to respond rather than unconsciously react.Remember, you made the best decision you could at the time. Regret keeps you stuck, weakens and drains your confidence. You become worried about making any decisions at all. Ultimately, it’s about moving forward and taking action.
The next time you slip up and make a mistake, I challenge you to do the following:
1. Acknowledge it.
2. Learn from it. Find the humour or good.
3. Try again. Continue on your way to greatness with confidence!
