Dear friends and family
I would just like to thank each and every one of you that showed my late brother Trevor Perekles any form of kindness and compassion. I know a lot of you may have thought he was a cantankerous old bugger when you saw him around town in his wheelchair.
Often begging a rand or two, but I don’t think many of you actually realised what a very wise man he really was and laughed and joked with people in spite of the incredible pain he endured daily.
A lot of people thought it was foolish of him to give away all his money he received for the loss of his legs but he had a generous heart and gave to people he did not even know, some of whom, when he had no more money to give, shunned him when he needed them the most.
Yes, he made a mess of his personal life due to alcoholism, but he paid the price for it. My late mother used to say: “There but for the grace of God go you or I.”
I will miss him terribly but am happy that his suffering is over and he can now rest eternally, not having to worry where he will find a bed or a meal for the night. I know a lot of people helped him but he helped a lot of people too. So, once again I say thank you to all of you Good Samaritans out there.
I will always be very grateful to you. God bless.
Ivy Smit
