Tis the season to be thankful… except for the President…
Tis the season to be jolly, or so the Christmas Carol says. Tis the season to be jolly, or so the Christmas Carol says.
But in a country with rampant crime, a weakening rand, a corrupt government and a mampara for a President, what is there to be joyful about?
Well for one, Bafana Bafana didn’t lose all their games this year, the Springboks made the semi-finals of the World Cup (despite that embarrassing loss to Japan) and the Proteas retained their Number One in the world Test status, despite going down to India. Our swimmers continue to make the country proud and Kevin Anderson is making a mark among the big names in the tennis world.
Away from the sporting world, we can be thankful and joyful that we live in a beautiful country, that despite its flaws, is still an amazing place to be.
We don’t live in a country so terrible that we are forced to flee, just to have a better life.
Imagine South Africans immigrating to Australia…oh wait…that has already happened.
Tis also the season to reflect on the year that has passed and learn from your mistakes.
It’s not only your own mistakes you can learn from, you can also learn valuable lessons from others.
For instance, no matter how much your partner annoys you, it’s not always a good idea to shoot them in a locked bathroom.
Sure, you can plead innocence and say that you thought it was a burglar, but sooner or later you’re going to be found guilty of murder.
Another lesson that shouldn’t be forgotten is that you don’t need qualifications to get a good job anymore.
You can pretend to have degrees, blame Unisa for losing your qualifications and continue to earn tons of money until eventually your bosses smell a rat.
By then you’ve already spent tax payers money on things the country doesn’t need and made enough money to live a comfy life after you’re fired.
All jokes aside, there is much to be appreciative for, especially the little things we generally take for granted.
Life is too short to complain about the small things when we have so many big things in our lives that we aren’t thankful for.
There is lots to look forward too, things to get excited about and changes to be made. So learn from the past, enjoy the present and live an amazing future.
Have a blessed festive season and an awesome New Year.
