Are you contributing to corruption?

Madam – Thank you for the very informative article on corruption refer last week front page.

I think in this whole country in general someone at one time or the other has had an issue with corruption. You don’t even have to look very far to realise that it’s happening everywhere, especially a government with leaders of the country not even bothering to hide their corruption anymore because they think they are untouchable.

But I think what these people who take part in corrupt dealings fail to realise is the impact and damage caused by their actions. I am sure lots of people are guilty of what they think is an innocent act, like buying pirate DVDs from street vendors.

They don’t consider what they have caused by purchasing items like this. These items could have been stolen from someone else and violence could have been caused yet they do not think of that when they are looking for a cheap and easy solution.

It might not seem like a big thing to you at the time but you are now actively part of the circle of crime and corruption, and yet you say South Africa is full of crime and corruption and you want to leave, but even this small act contributes in a way you don’t even think of!

So I want to urge all the good people of Newcastle to think the next time they decide to go for the cheap and easy and quick route.

Think about whether it is right to buy that illegal DVD or purchase gold from questionable ‘pawn shops’ in the CBD. You might think you are not hurting anyone, but in truth you are adding to the crime and corruption and by your actions you are allowing it to continue.

If there is no market for questionably gained goods, then crime will be forced to stop too. Instead of complaining, why not do your part?
