Sadness in a crumbling country
To the family and friends of the victims of the shooting - may you one day find peace.
Madam – The article about the tourist shot last week refers.
I am so saddened by what is happening in this country. An innocent life was lost and a family was shattered because for some, it’s easier to kill and steal than earn an honest living. It’s heartbreaking and unnecessary.
Mrs Hongwei Tang’s family and friends will never get to know the South Africa I as born and raised in. They will never know about the diverse and friendly people, the beautiful scenery and vibrant lifestyles. They will never know of a neighbour’s generosity, or the way a community will stand together to help a neighbouring town. Their association with South Africa will forever be tainted with Mrs Tang’s horrific murder.
It sickens me to think that this is the message we are giving the rest of the world – a country more reliant on crime and corruption, murder and greed, than one of peace and sunshine and happiness.
Every day there is something new, and yet for most of us, we just want to live a normal, quiet existence, doing our best to give back. And yet we are confronted with the sadistic and often desperate actions of men and women who feel the country has failed them, so they take what they want and resort to violence instead of getting off their butts and contributing in a legal way.
To the family and friends of the victims of the shooting – may you one day find peace. You may never want to come back to South Africa, and that is understandable. I am just sad that you may never know how much we really have to offer.
