In light of making every day Mandela Day, we have to take action and inspire the positive change we so badly want to see. One day on Thanksgiving, a boy and his family had no food and no money when a man delivered a huge box of food, a turkey and pans to cook it in.
The experience had a profound impact on the boy’s life. He vowed one day he would be well off enough to do the same thing for other people. When the young man turned 18, he started an annual ritual, buying enough food to feed one or two families, dressing as a delivery boy and knocking on doors at random.
He never revealed he was the donor. With each box he left a note explaining his own past and saying
“All I ask in return is that you take good enough care of yourself so that someday you can do the same thing for someone else.”
The story goes on to tell of one year when he was in New York and wanted to deliver food to Harlem.The man, his wife and business partners needed a van but no van and driver would agree to go to that part of the city.
Then the perfect van pulled up just as the team were about to give up on the project. The driver was the captain of the Salvation Army; he asked:
“Why do you people want to do this?”
The man told him his story and said: “I want to show gratitude for all that I have by giving something back.”
They had food for seven families for 30 days and went out to a building where half a dozen people stayed in one room, with no electricity and no heat during the heart of winter. Being able to help and make even the smallest of differences brings you a truly fulfilling experience. After reading this I’m sure you can now see you can make anything happen if you commit to it
