Pemphigus vulgaris is an auto-immune disease which means that the body’s immune system fights off its own cells because it sees them as foreign.
It is a rare condition and it is not known why the immune system develops antibodies that attack healthy skin tissue. The disease manifests as blisters inside the mouth, later spreading to other areas of the body.
Pemphigus Vulgaris is not infectious and cannot be passed onto another person. It affects anyone of any age, sex or race but it is more common in people of Jewish origin.
Flare ups can occur at anytime and will not disappear without treatment. Oral corticosteroids are used to control the disease.
