Sir
Dundonians are no strangers to noise pollution.
The purveyors of noise nuisance are almost always ad hoc parties, which can flare up on any street corner or open space, become extremely noisy and sometimes even block traffic.
Roaming parties, mostly over weekends, also congregate in open spaces in residential areas, where noise nuisance occurs manifestly and quite often with impunity, as law enforcement officials will turn a blind eye to this scourge.
Building and maintenance work, especially where power tools are involved, or people hammering on roofs on Sunday afternoons, is another object of irritation.
Disturbing noise: no person shall make, produce or cause a disturbing noise, or allow it to be made, produced or caused by any person, animal, machine, device or apparatus or any combination thereof.
This can usually be solved internally between parties, and police will often only act after 10pm, if they feel like it.
Noise nuisance is totally different. This kind of noise can include playing loud music or a musical instrument or operating a television set loudly, operating machinery or power tools that cause a noise nuisance, shouting and talking loudly, allowing an animal to become a noise nuisance, operating a vehicle that causes a noise nuisance and driving a vehicle on a public road in a manner that causes a noise nuisance.
It is already affecting tourism stakeholders and accommodation venues, which quite often have no other choice than to close down.
