Celebrating Valentine’s Day, Uncle Bobby style

Valentine’s Day is around the corner and once again the rush begins.
It becomes a mini silly season as people race around trying to find the perfect gift for that special someone, or, someone they think could be special in the future.
Teddy bears, chocolates, flowers and cards adorn store shelves and are bought almost as quickly as they are packed out.
There’s so much red around the town that the bulls running in Pamplona would have a field day. Valentine’s Day is a lot crazier now than it ever was in the past.
This could be due to the fact that many youngsters are already celebrating the day at an early age, sometimes more passionately than the adults.
Uncle Bobby, who has celebrated more Valentine’s Days than he cares to remember, doesn’t understand why everyone makes such a fuss. “In my day we never worried about all this Valentine’s nonsense. Nowadays laaities spend so much money on girls and gifts,” he said.
“The only cards we bought was one Bicycle pack so we could play Thunee with the ous.
“Our cards had lots of hearts also, just like Valentine’s Day, especially when we called a Thunee,” Uncle Bobby added.
Uncle Bobby and Aunty Sally have been married for 49 years now so that’s 49 years of gifts and even more if you count the courting phase. “Never buy too expensive gifts when you first start dating, that stekkie will expect something bigger and better every year, so start small.”
Uncle Bobby also had tips for those guys who weren’t sure if a girl liked them or not.
“If she calls you bhaiya or best friend then you got no chance, rather give up now and find one another one.
“She’s going to chow the chocolates and still call you bhai (brother) afterwards.”
With those words in mind, don’t go overboard this Valentine’s Day. Instead take every day and make it special even by doing something small.
There’s nothing worse than making a fuss of someone on one day, but not appreciating them every other day of the year. Be creative, be different, make it special and if you do call a Thunee, make sure you don’t get caught.
