A woman’s invaluable role

Women need to begin to take responsibility of keeping up to date with their own financial and risk needs

While I unequivocally believe that being a stay at home mum is undoubtedly the most difficult yet rewarding job of all, no working-class woman should ever feel guilty for pursuing their career as not only are they positive role models to their impressionable children but they are better positioned to contribute financially towards their loved ones.

It’s about the quality of time we spend with our children and not the quantity. Children don’t need material spoils but rather quality time, discipline and role-models who live by uncompromising values to shape their personality and attitudes!

But be it stay at home or working class, women have come a long way and their value and contribution towards the family upkeep and society has become for more recognised. There is also the aspect of their financial value that should not be underestimated.

In the case of a stay at home mum, remember that the husbands need to consider their wives needs too for when they retire, as she will still need to maintain the household. Husbands would need to consider medical aid and dread disease cover for the wives too, as the shocking costs in the event of health emergencies, are often taken for granted.

I also often find that in cases where the husband has the main source of income, because the wife earns less; her income protection, life, dread and disability cover and mostly her retirement contributions are unfortunately under estimated.

Women need to begin to take responsibility of keeping up to date with their own financial and risk needs. Single mums need to especially not take for granted their cover and planning. It’s not easy, no doubt, because most single mums pull double duty in all arenas of parenting but risk planning needs to be prioritised because her income is her greatest asset!
