I thought I would share in particular the ethics quick test which I believe applies to all businesses and individuals and is an excellent moral compass to go by to ensure you genuinely earn respect as a professional or businessman/woman and as especially as an individual.

These are personal and business minimum values to attempt to uphold. The first question to ask when testing your integrity is: “Is it legal?” If you are considering to say or do something that’s illegal, don’t! It’s as simple as that!

Question two is: ‘What does my company/professional code of ethics say about this?” If your actions go against your stipulated business code of conduct don’t breach it!

The third question is regarded as the sunshine test: “How will it look in tomorrow’s papers?” What if your actions appeared in the morning papers? Would you stand tall with conviction or not only be utterly embarrassed but would stand to suffer reputational damage?

The fourth question is referred to as the golden test. Even spiritually it is referred to as karma or biblically it can be compared to the verse regarding do unto others as you will have them do unto you!’ “How would you feel if it was said or done to you?”

The fifth and final question boils down to your actual personal values:
“How does it make you feel?” Does it prick or torture your conscience? In your gut do you believe it’s wrong?

In essence integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching. It’s the fundamental value that ensures the longevity and growth of any good business.
