Editor – I witnessed a most intriguing drag racing event at the Dundee airfield, hosted by a private club.
Cars from as far as Richards Bay and Gauteng participated.
As expected, there were many cars from Ladysmith as well and they all performed exceptionally well to keep our town’s name high.
The organisation was tops and the huge crowd that attended the event went home thoroughly satisfied with the spectacle of petrol-heads racing against each other to set the fastest times in their respective category. There were bikes too from Ladysmith that sizzled the track with eye-popping times.
What I would like to know is: Why can’t such an event be hosted in Ladysmith? Dundee is much smaller, yet they are miles ahead of us as far as drag racing is concerned.
I still remember that racing event that was held many years ago at the local airfield.
Why can’t we have another one like that? Why must local boys travel out of town to show how good they are or how powerful their vehicles are?
Remember, they spend huge amounts on their mean machines just to get their cabs to run a few seconds quicker. These efforts must be supported by local business and the local municipality.
Rather spend on their cars and bikes than on drugs and crime.
The authorities cannot wish drag racing away. It caught on after films like ‘Fast and Furious’. And it is in the nature of boys and some girls to win.
This competitive spirit is here to stay, no matter what the speeding fines.
Don’t you think it should be held in a controlled environment? And the money generated can go to deserving charities.
Years ago, Mr Glen Singh and Anwar Jessop initiated that wonderful event at the airfield. Please do that again. Our town will benefit.
