LETTER: Donating to charity is an honourable deed

Madam- With the chilly winter breezes brushing our shoulders it is truly wonderful being witness the large number of organisations who are collecting warm coats and blankets for our less fortunate citizens.

I see that the Newcastle Advertiser has also joined this group by starting a blankets and jacket collecting point.

I feel that this winter has definitely an edge to it which was not noticeable last year, and believe me it gets cold on the streets.

I do know that there was an winter awareness initiative launched in Johannesburg a few years back, when company executives volunteered to spend a night on the street, to bring the plight of the homeless to the attention of the public.

The street was sealed off of course, and security was obviously in place, to keep the participants safe. I do not know if it still takes place each year, but I am certain a point was proven.

Maybe we can do something similar here? Of course, we generally only consider us humans, but please spare a thought for the dogs and cats who are not provided with a warm place to sleep, and I am certain there are many of those around our town!

Still, collecting for our less fortunate residents is surely a very honourable deed and greatly appreciated by those who are in real need.

So Newcastle, all hail to those groups collecting for the needy. Bless you!
