Sir
The recent spate of taxi crashes in our province – in particular the recent incident in Durban involving 18 learners and a driver who fled the scene – are extremely disturbing.
The reality is that most of these accidents are the result of illegal roadworthiness certificates and drivers with illegal drivers’ licences.
Recently the province’s Transport Department conducted a sting operation at the Mkondeni Licencing offices. This is precisely the kind of operation that is needed in order to flush out corruption and other lawlessness.
The DA urges MEC Mxolisi Kaunda to intensify such operations in an effort to reduce the unacceptably high annual road fatality rate in KZN.
Our province’s road users can no longer take their lives into their hands every time they travel.
Rafeek Shah, MPL
DA KZN Spokesperson on Transport
