Sir – Despite assurances from KZN’s Department of Transport (DoT) that it is doing everything in its power to reduce taxi-related crashes involving learners, these incidents continue unabated.
The current situation calls for drastic measures. Yet, in an ironic twist, the very measures which seek to make travelling by taxi safer are not being welcomed by this sector of the transport industry.
A classic example of this is the recent rampage by minibus drivers in the Durban CBD who caused mayhem, burned tyres, pulled passengers out of buses and threatened road users safety – all because they are angry with Metro Police’s demand that certain traffic regulations involving permits be met.
The ever-increasing incidents of road crashes involving taxis (especially in rural areas) as well as mini-bus related violent protests and wanton acts of destructive violence is a clear indication that KZN’s failed ANC government has completely lost control over this sector of the transport industry.
Meanwhile, public complaints about the pathetic and often life-threatening conduct of minibus taxi drivers is an exercise in futility.
