Some 25 years ago, schools in Forderville and residents addressed the issue of thick layers of black soot settling throughout the Forderville township. The Masonite factory was one of the major causes of the problem, but the issue was addressed by installing extractors.

This ‘ugly head’ has reared itself again.

The suspected defaulter is Evowood (formerly Masonite). While this matter has been taken up with Evowood and signs of improvement have been noticed, affected residents are advised to address their concerns to the relevant role players.

Please be advised that a member of the uThukela Health Department and concerned residents are monitoring the situation, but feel assured that a very co-operative management team at Evowood will get on top of this major problem and health hazard.

Concerned Resident

Mr Nkosinathi Nhlangulela of Evowood said that a concerned resident had a productive meeting with the company’s management team and they will be arranging to meet him again to provide feedback. Mr Nhlangulela confirmed that the mill is complaint with the Emissions Act and that the boilers are operating at 50% capacity currently due to production requirements.
