Madam –
What an inspiring article that brought to our attention the Youth Development Programme that was directed toward the Young Falcons who attended a two week development camp.
This type of intervention in the lives of the youth of this country is of great importance, both for their individual development as well as for the benefit of South Africa. The adage of “what ye sow, so shall ye reap” cannot be underestimated.
For those of us already trained and employed, the idea of not being in a paying job is difficult to grasp.
The idea of planting the concept of a career in aviation in a fertile young mind is an admirable undertaking.
Generally, students follow the well trodden track of accountancy, teaching or one of the many medical fields. I wonder just how many considered the aircraft and flying as a wonderful alternative?
Judging by the enthusiastic grins on the Young Falcons holding their trophies, a grand time had been had, even though they spent the two weeks learning life skills and how to carry themselves.
This was definitely not a holiday camp! Even the photograph of the Young Falcons marching past at their Passing Out Parade, showed four ranks of young people with shoulders back, arms straight and looking squarely ahead.
These young people have been given the goods and they know just where they are going.
Of course the purpose of this development initiative was as a recruitment drive for the SAAF, with support from many other industry partners who actively support the SAAF`s activities.
In these difficult economic times, once you have successfully passed your Grade 12 examination, each young person’s dream is further education in a chosen field that leads to permanent employment.
Judging by the article, the SAAF would seem to be the place to be.
