Community needs to clean up its act – LETTER

The river is badly choked with litter and hundreds of bottles

Sir
I agree whole heartedly with the sentiments expressed in last week’s letter, regarding Dundee entering and probably winning the dirtiest town of the year award.
Ironically, it was in the same issue where the Mayor called for the greening of Endumeni – which of course I fully support.
Walking around Peacevale on Saturday during the Gandhi Walk, I was horrified to discover the place is a real tip.
An open field is green – not from grass but from the famous beer bottles.
Gutters are choked with litter, dumping is prevalent and the no dumping signs are a pathetic attempt to control residents who just do not give a damn.
Crossing the Steenkoolspruit was especially disturbing.
The river is badly choked with litter and hundreds of bottles.
When the river does come down in flood, the water will run over the banks because of all the litter, then residents will blame the municipality.
It is really sad there is no respect for the environment, and although everyone talks about it – no one actually does anything about it.
I would like to call on the same good folk who did the Gandhi Walk – who represented a cross section of the community – to perhaps encourage a mass community clean up.
Really people, the situation is grim.
SN Rajoo
