Vryheid 1 and 2 to face Hillcrest in Dewar Shield final at King’s Park

NORTHERN KZN Rugby Union champions, Vryheid first and second teams, will be playing the final for the Dewar Shield (Best first division side in KZN) against the winners of the Southern KZN League, Hillcrest, as a curtain-raiser to the Sharks vs Lions Super Rugby clash in Durban on July 15.

Our men in maroon will have their work cut out for them as it looks set to be a ruthless clash against a resolute Hillcrest side, who recently won their pool in Durban and will not go down without a fight.

“It’s going to be a hard game,” says Vryheid Rugby Club Chairman and Outside Centre for the first team, Mornè Ellis, “but it’s going to be fun because it’s at Growthpoint King’s Park Stadium and every rugby player dreams of playing there.”

“Just enjoy every single minute,” is his advice to the boys. “Play your hearts out for Vryheid Rugby Club. We are there for a reason so let’s show them what Vryheid Rugby Club can do.”

First team coach, Rich Verster adds, “Playing at the park is a privilege. Playing a curtain raiser for the Sharks vs Lions will be a memorable once in a lifetime experience.”

“The team has done well this season,” says second team coach, Jono Beghin. “For the players, it should be a real goal and a challenge to win at King’s Park. The prize is to be crowned the top team in KZN in their division and it would be a wonderful way for the seconds to end a special season. Hillcrest will have had more tough games though and so the seconds will have to be on top of their game to win.”

This match will offer Vryheid Rugby Club’s dedicated teams the opportunity to earn the title of best first and second division teams in the whole of KwaZulu Natal.
