Taking the plunge for their colours

The time has arrived for Abigail Peters and Sheryl-Anne Grobler to put their aquatic skills to the test.

The time has arrived for Abigail Peters and Sheryl-Anne Grobler to put their aquatic skills to the test.

The two teenagers from Newcastle Swimming Club will be travelling to Cape Town to participate in a three-day gala, from March 7 until March 9, to compete for South African colours.

“I am looking forward to it. I have been working hard and all my hard work will now pay off,” Sheryl-Anne said.

Confident of success, Abigail explained a lot of preparation went into competing in galas such as this. “We train two hours in the morning and in the afternoo.”

However, Sheryl-Anne said their training was not restricted to water. “We do land training as well, which involves training muscles used in swimming. This involves going to gym and other exercises such as push-ups.”

Despite the sacrifice, both girls agreed it was the love for the sport that kept them going.

“We have been swimming all our lives and love everything about the it,” Abigail said.
