Siblings, Amy and Cameron Fraser will be swimming the daunting Freedom Swim in Cape Town on April 10.
The annual event takes place from Robben Island and ends at Bloubergstrand.
Despite facing chilly water conditions, the siblings are confident about their chances in the 7.5 kilometre event. “I am a bit nervous about sharks and the cold, but not about the distance,” Cameron said.
Amy said she was also rather concerned about sea life such as seals and the cold water conditions. “I am sure I will make it though,” she said.
Amy (19) and Cameron (18) have been swimming for 14 years, giving them ample experience to prepare themselves for the strenuous event. “Before the event, we will prepare by swimming as many kilometres as possible,” Amy explained.
Cameron also emphasised the importance of mental preparation. “I have already started preparing myself for the cold and am ready for it.”
As Amy and Cameron prepare to dive into the physically demanding open water swimming event, one could not forget its rich significance.
The swim is held annually to symbolise South Africa’s Freedom Day and democracy. Through this, swimmers push their bodies to the limit in remembrance of South Africa’s history.
