Extreme heat expected for next two days

Ladysmith will have no break from the rising temperatures, with no rain expected for today and only 30 per cent chance tomorrow

It is going to be a long, hot two days coming up, with no break from the extreme heat we are currently experiencing. High temperatures of 40° Celsius and above are predicted in Ladysmith for today and tomorrow.

Yesterday’s heat is expected to rise and get worse.

The South African Weather Services say that high temperatures are not uncommon for this time of year. However, temperatures of 40° and above is unheard of in Ladysmith and is worrying to residents, who are doing their best to stay cool.

Others parts of the country are also experiencing the onslaught of the heat-wave, which is showing no signs of abating any time soon. Ladysmith will have no break from the rising temperatures, with no rain expected for today and only 30 per cent chance tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to peak at 40 / 41° Celsius.

This while we are experiencing the worst drought in 37 years and parts of town are being water-shed.

Some tips to stay cool and hydrated in these extreme weather conditions:

  • Limit outdoor activity, especially midday when the sun is hottest.
  • Wear and re-apply sunscreen as indicated on the package.
  • Pace activity. Start activities slow and pick up the pace gradually.
  • Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more. Muscle cramping may be an early sign of heat-related illness.
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-coloured clothing. Never leave children or pets in cars.
  • Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
  • Never leave children or pets in the car.
  • Community members are warned not to take their dogs for walks between 12pm and 1pm due to the terrible heat.
  • Wait until after 5pm in the afternoon for family water activities.
