Andile is striding to a brighter future
"It is my time to shine, I want to be someone's rolemodel"
Andile Mavuso is a young man with a mission and is making great strides to achieve his goals.
The Mtshezi High School learner was at the starting line at the OR Tambo Marathon held in Bloemfontein on April 16. His pace, determination and training paid dividends when Andile was awarded a bronze medal for completing in this 42.2km marathon.
But getting to the finish line was a trying task as Andile had to approach sponsors for running shoes and financial support. Deciding to nurture Andile’s talent, Mondli Mkhize, Bonga Memela and Tim Hume assisted with the necessities.
“This medal I received,” said the soft-spoken young man, “is for everyone who supported me. I want to assure them that I will push harder. It is my time to shine, I want to be someone’s rolemodel, but not without you. I would also like to thank Mrs and Mr Meyer and all staff from the municipality from helping me achieve my dream,” Andile said.
To encourage young people to steer clear from social ills, Andile penned a message to the youth:
“Guys, drugs kill. They destroy everything, including your future and your talent. Keep your mind active with sport, it is very enjoyable and will keep you healthy. It is your choice, but make sure every decision you take, will lead to a brighter future. Keep away from alcohol, tobacco and unprotected sex, which leads to teenage pregnancies.”
