Archer strikes the bullseye

When it comes to archery, Jonathan Pentz always has one eye open.

When it comes to archery, Jonathan Pentz always has one eye open.

His journey with the sport began five years ago, and three years later, he entered the discipline of competitive archery.

Since then, Jonathan has contested numerous competitions countrywide.

“I enjoy being out in the open, and archery is a family-oriented sport. It’s all about the experience of being with nature.”

Most recently, Jonathan successfully contested for a Mathews bow, autographed by popular television host and bowhunter, Tom Miranda.

He plans to put this bow to good use.

“I’ve shot about 10 arrows and it’s super smooth. I’m definitely going to use it, and I think that’s what Tom Miranda would have expected of me.”

Jonathan also won an additional prize of a bush pig hunt at Knysna, with plans to undertake the hunt in winter-time.

Beyond his own pursuits, he is intent on fostering young archery talent.

“I’m looking at training young children, to eventually compete at professional events like the Olympic Games.”

Already, Jonathan’s son is a proficient shot, and at just three years old, has been gifted with his first bow.

It’s Jonathan’s way of keeping his passion alive.

“I have been shooting arrows for as long as I can remember.”

Although the sport does not enjoy the same exposure as more common breeds, the revival of the Newcastle Archery Club has been welcomed.

It boasts about 10 members, ranging from novices to experienced shooters.

“We shoot once a week and meet monthly. I expect this will increase as we go on.”

Looking ahead, Jonathan said he will keep improving his skills, believing the more you shoot, the better you become.

“The most important things to remember are concentration, focus and leaving the stress behind.”
