St Gregory scores a hole in one

There were games, face paint and a jumping castle outside the clubhouse to entertain the young ones while the grown-ups tried their luck at the chipping competition

St Gregory Primary School hosted a Golf Day on Sunday, 12 June, at the Estcourt Golf Club as a fundraising initiative. Businesses and members of the community took the school’s hands to organise and run the event.

60 golfers, including three women and two young boys, Connor (9) and Oliver (7) Brown, weathered the cold to participate and compete for fabulous prizes. The full field of players consisted of a mixture of local golfers and out of town players that travelled to Estcourt specifically for the golf day. The game consisted of a four ball alliance with a scramble drive and two scores to count. The golfers also had to overcome an obstacle on the third hole in the form of an eye-patch.

There were games, face paint and a jumping castle outside the clubhouse to entertain the young ones while the grown-ups tried their luck at the chipping competition. This competition turned out to be just as fierce as the competition on the golf course!

The day concluded with a prize giving ceremony after lunch. The prizes went down to seventh position and there were also five novelty prizes.

The first place went to George van Niekerk, Ruben Meades, Vivian Seager and Ian Marx. The chipping competition was, ironically, won by a non-golfer, Greg Slater, who simply refused to give up once he set his heart on winning. He smiled from ear to ear as he walked to the stage to take ownership of his brand new bar fridge.

The last of the formalities was to draw the winner of the raffle. Mrs P Saltmarsh was the lucky recipient of the impala.

St Gregory Primary School would like to thank the golf club and all the sponsors, donors and well-wishers that made the day not only possible, but also a huge success. The golf day will become an annual event that will grow in stature over the years.
