Professional angling league ready for the big cast off

The Angling Professional League (APL) starts its fourth season with the VME League at Richgate Park on August 20. Breakwaters start their defence of the title with strong competition expected from Ladysmith, Stillwaters, Challengers, Dannhauser and newcomers, Glencoe Angling Club.
The “angler of the day”, the one who accumulates the most points, will be awarded an outright trophy, the orange cap and R200 cash at the conclusion of each competition. The angler leading the log will don the purple cap.
The winning club for each league, knocks-out and Grand Challenge competitions will be awarded prize money of R500, while additional cash prizes amounting to R500, is awarded to anglers in their personal capacity for landing carps and barbels over the 4kg and 10kg mark respectively.
The top three anglers of the season shall be awarded tackle vouchers worth R3 000, R2 000 and R1 000.
This season, the APL has introduced an innovative closed competition for all members affiliated to the APL. This competition would be based on the principles of an open competition with substantial and lucrative prizes and cash on offer.
At the conclusion of the weigh-in, the title holders for the past season shall be awarded a floating and outright trophy. Preetam Birbal (Danny Mashlamoney Govinder Memorial Trophy for the heaviest carp of 3,650kg); Sikander Amod (Errol Ramparsad Memorial Trophy for the heaviest non-scaled fish of 6,9kg); Suvyn Budhoo (Complete Tech Trophy for rare species category, a bass of 1,090kg – who wins himself R500 in this category); Talia Boodhoo (Newcastle Funeral Home Floating Trophy for the Junior Angler of the Year); Veruschka Boodhoo (The Anil Gangai Memorial Trophy for the Lady Angler of the Year); Iqbal Asraff (Asime Sonke Trading and Projects for the senior angler of the year category) and Ebrahim Mia (AA Tours Floating Trophy for Angler of Year with 75 pts); followed by Nadir Chrisenduth (Breakwaters AC on 64 pts) and Mohamed Mia (Challengers AC on 52 pts) who win themselves R3 000, R2 000 and R1 000 fishing tackle for their efforts.

Breakwaters and Stillwater Angling Clubs held their “warm” fixture, the Champion of Champions round one at Richgate Park on August 6. It was a great start to the season for the Captain of Breakwaters, Monty Slabbert, who scored 12 pts followed by Veruschka Boodhoo (4 pts), Sipho Manyoni (4 pts), Oosie Oosthuizen (4 pts) and Rodney Ince (3 pts).
