Albert takes first honours in angling professional league
The record clerks had an easy day as the catches were few and far with the lucky ones landing the elusive fish.
The Angling Professional League (APL) started with the hosting of the VME League One at Richgate Park on August 20.
Some of the anglers had gathered at the main gate as early as Saturday afternoon to secure their favourite spot despite the bitterly cold weather as the mercury dropped to minus one degree.
The record clerks had an easy day as the catches were few and far with the lucky ones landing the elusive fish. Ladysmith Angling Club emerged victors with 32 pts; followed by Breakwaters (22 pts); Dannhauser (12 pts); Challengers (10 pts); Stillwaters (5 pts) and Glencoe Angling Club was unlucky not to record a point.
The VME League sees Ladysmith AC in poll position on 12 pts; followed by Breakwaters (10 pts); Dannhauser (8 pts); Challengers (6 pts); Stillwaters (4 pts) and Glencoe (2 pts).
The standout angler of the day was Albert van Niekerk of Breakwaters who scored an impressive 11 points, winning the Orange and Green Caps, an outright trophy and R200 sponsored by Dr. Eugene Ramparsad.
The successful anglers for the season 2016/2017 were presented with their awards and trophies.
The high flyers for the past season include:
Preetam Birbal receiving the Danny Mashlamoney Govinder Memorial Trophy for the heaviest carp of 3,650kg); Sikander Amod (Errol Ramparsad Memorial Trophy for the heaviest non-scaled fish of 6,9kg); Suvyn Budhoo (Complete Tech Trophy for rare specie category, a bass of 1,090kg – who wins himself R500 in this category); Talia Boodhoo (Newcastle Funeral Home Floating Trophy for the Junior Angler of the Year); Veruschka Boodhoo (The Anil Gangai Memorial Trophy for the Lady Angler of the Year); Iqbal Asraff (Asime Sonke Trading and Projects for the Senior angler of the year category) and Ebrahim Mia (AA Tours Floating Trophy for Angler of Year with 75 pts); followed by Nadir Chrisenduth (Breakwaters AC on 64 pts) and Mohamed Mia (Challengers AC on 52 pts) who win themselves R3 000, R2 000 and R1 000 fishing tackle for their efforts.
The next fixture of the APL is the VME League 2 on October 22 at Sandford. The season promises to be challenging and competitive one going forward.
