Cricket season in full swing
After some much-needed rain, the teams gathered on a beautiful sunny morning for a delayed start
Umtshezi Cricket Association’s 2017/8 season continued on Sunday, despite inclement weather in the preceding days. The game on Friday was cancelled due to rain (game to be re-scheduled).
On Sunday, Colita played Wembezi in a Pro 30 match. After some much-needed rain, the teams gathered on a beautiful sunny morning for a delayed start. Colita won the toss and decided to bat first.
After a shaky start by the debutant opening pair things settled during the partnership between Mikaelan, scoring 90 runs off 68 balls and Vishaylin, scoring 35 off 39 giving Colita the platform to score freely. After the 30 overs were up, Colita had managed to score 254/8.
Wembezi took on the new ball and were well on track by the tenth over with 65/2 with Thulani, the captain, leading the way. The good start was all in vain, as they could not build on the starts made by the opening batsman and after a collapse by the middle order, there was just too much left to do by the tail and Wembezi managed a decent 110 runs all out in the 19th over.

With most of the Colita players getting a chance to bowl and each getting some wickets, the pick of them had to be Talha, bowling a very impressive spell, taking two wickets for only 20 runs in his six overs and definitely one to watch for the future. With cricket development in Umtshezi being a top priority for the Umtshezi Cricket Association, special thanks should go out to both teams.
Wembezi Cricket players and their coaching staff for their continued efforts in participation and Colita Cricket Club for playing six scholars in the starting 11 on Sunday with three players making their debut at senior level.
