If you are considering playing table tennis, Yuashin says it builds self-confidence and increases your determination to be a winner

“Once you start, you won’t want to stop…” This is how avid table tennis player Yuashin Sewsunker describes the game.

The 17-year-old is a member of the Estcourt Table Tennis Club and has been playing competitively for eight months.
Yuashin says his competitive streak attracted him to take up the game seriously, and playing against his dad bolstered his confidence.

When asked what he enjoys most about table tennis, Yuashin says: “It’s just exciting, experiencing the feeling of the moment and it is exhilarating to win a match.”

He adds that one of the highlights is playing against senior players in the club.

“It’s fun to be working for points. You get a lot of cardio from the games and your hand-eye co-ordination improves,” he says of the advantages of playing table tennis.

He enjoys playing doubles, as it requires teamwork, and his strength is a top-spin smash. If you are considering playing table tennis, Yuashin says it builds self-confidence and increases your determination to be a winner.

Currently a Grade 12 learner at Drakensberg Secondary School, Yuashin’s other hobbies include swimming and fishing.

The Estcourt Table Tennis Club was started in October 2018.

“We saw a need to start an official club with a set venue, instead of playing in people’s garages. This allowed many table tennis enthusiasts to come together to play, have fun and also take their game to higher levels,” said club member Jeshan Reddy.

The club currently has 30 members – 20 seniors and 10 juniors – with the oldest being 73 years old and the youngest 11 years old.

The club hosts league tournaments for members, as well as an open tournament for all Estcourt players.

“There is no specific criteria for membership, as this is for all members of the community. We will train and nurture your progress step by step,” said Mr Reddy.
