Bowls goes virtual and they are still having loads of fun

Technology is being used to keep members rolling.

Bowlers have always been a friendly bunch who love nothing more than rolling their woods on weekends, weekdays and every other day in between.

The well-known Business League, that combines teams of novices and the more adept in a fun league, has created many friendships across all race groups, who enjoy the camaraderie. As is the case with all other sports, the coronavirus crisis has brought bowls to a complete stop. No longer can one pass by on Coronation Street and hear the satisfying clink of woods on the greens. One no longer hears the cries of “too much grass’’ or “your weight is great’’.

But Greg Conolly and his spirited team from Dundee Bowls Club are not letting the situation get them down.

“This national lockdown has and is taking its toll on us all. However, we stay positive and despite the frustrations, we cling to the word hope,” said Greg. And for those who think bowlers are just a bunch of fuddie-duddies, you are wrong! Technology is being used to keep members rolling. “We have already held three virtual ‘Tabs-In Chicken Runs’ and one ‘Bingo’ evening. With our ‘Chicken Runs’, the folk enter via our Whatsapp group.” The draw is then done by the president, Greg, in the safety of his house and then two games are played. The scores and winners are determined by the roll of a dice.

“The welcome, first draw, first round play, second round draw, second round play and prize-giving are videoed and uploaded onto our Whatsapp group at different intervals. This keeps the folk
entertained for about two hours.

Check the Courier website, www.northernnatalcourier. co.za, and catch up on the fun.”
