Locals to participate in first ever virtual Comrades Marathon

Runners from across the world have an opportunity to participate in this ultra-marathon, with a few tweaks

More than a dozen locals will be part of this year’s virtual Comrades Marathon tomorrow (June 14).

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of the Comrades Marathon was called off. Instead the Comrades Marathon Association devised a novel plan and the ‘virtual Comrades Marathon’ was borne.

Runners from across the world have an opportunity to participate in this ultra-marathon, with a few tweaks.
Nishal Mahadow from Forderville Athletic Club – that is hosting the Estcourt runners – explained that there are four distances – 90km, 45km, 21km and 10km.

Runners register on the virtual Comrades Marathon app and then add their start and finish times, these are registered on the Comrades Marathon website. Online entries close at midnight today, so there is still time to enter.

“In Estcourt, we have a 21km and 10km for the runners and we’ve also included a 5km for the children. We will start at 6am on Sunday, June 14 and will also have the ‘Chariots of Fire’ playing in the background at the start, just like the actual Comrades Marathon. After the run, we will then have a prize giving. The exciting part about this is that everyone that participates is treated as a Comrades runner and will receive a Comrades number,” explained Mr Mahadow.

The club will also be hosting runners from various other clubs and other towns.
