Ntando Khumalo storms to first place at parkrun
Ntando Khumalo wins as Carla Muller sets personal best at parkrun.
Saturday’s parkrun once again proved why the weekly event has become a firm favourite among runners and walkers of all ages, with standout performances, personal milestones, and a strong sense of community spirit taking centre stage.
A huge shout out goes to Ntando Khumalo, who stormed through the course to finish first overall, setting the pace for an impressive morning of running.
Women’s category highlights
Among the women, Carla Muller led the field as first female finisher, also celebrating her achievement in a personal best time – a result that reflects the dedication and consistency seen across the local running community.
Personal bests reflect strong form
In total, 11 personal best times were recorded on the day, highlighting a weekend of excellent form for Vryheid’s runners and walkers. Those achieving new personal bests included Carla Muller, Nkanyiso, Zar, Carladine, Deana, Elisma, Julia, Christa, Elna, Graham and Amy. Organisers noted that the performances are clear proof that steady training and commitment continue to pay off.
Part of a national parkrun network
The event also served as a reminder of the broader parkrun family, with participation continuing to grow across South Africa. There are now 228 parkrun events nationwide, all linked through a simple barcode system that allows participants to run or walk at any event in the country – and beyond – with their results automatically recorded.
Visitors are encouraged to explore new locations when travelling, with details of events, routes and start times available on the official parkrun website (parkrun.co.za). Participants can even volunteer at other venues by contacting local event teams in advance.
International spirit and volunteer support
This spirit of connection was on display locally as well, with Hettie and Gerhard Fourie from Stilbaai joining the Vryheid event as tailwalkers. Not only did they take part, but they also volunteered their time – a gesture organisers warmly acknowledged.
Milestones celebrated
Parkrun also marked a number of milestone achievements on Saturday. Micayla van Biljoen completed her 10th event, while Luis Tupper reached the 25-run milestone. Friedel Lilje and Pixie de Wet both celebrated their 50th parkrun, and Thembi Ngcobo together with Dietmar Dedekind reached an impressive 150 events each.
More than just a run
With celebrations, personal triumphs and strong camaraderie all rolled into one morning, Saturday’s parkrun once again reflected its role as more than just a run – but a growing national and international community where everyone is welcome.
